Wood chip moisture measurement
The heating plant covers 70% of the heating requirements of the municipality of Weiz - corresponding amounts of renewable fuel are burned every day. At peak times, the system heats 800.000 liters of water per hour. Only high-quality wood chips are used - supplied by farmers and sawmills in the region.
Since Fernwärme Weiz GmbH started using the professional humimeter BMA moisture meter to measure the moisture content of wood chips, a lot has changed - for the better. We met Managing Director Gerhard Hierz and Operations Manager Harald Meisl for a chat:

Since we have been measuring the water content of the material with every delivery of wood chips, the quality of the fuel has improved significantly. The use of high-quality material also increased the efficiency of the system. Higher-quality fuel also means less and less susceptibility to faults and promotes a smooth process.
Not to be forgotten is the reduction in ash accumulation thanks to higher-quality raw materials. We are now at an extremely low value of 1,3% ash content. This saves costs for ash disposal and of course our environment also benefits from it!
Our suppliers recognize the added value of moisture measurement very well. The business relationship is thus transparent and fair. Many of the delivering farmers are given an incentive and set themselves the goal of increasing the quality of their wood chips - of course, in the knowledge that this will also result in a better price being paid.
We have also observed that the visual impression of beautiful and clean wood chips can be deceptive. Only the exact moisture measurement with the tamper-proof humimeter BMA measuring device provides information about the actual quality! Our suppliers appreciate this fair, objective assessment and mutual trust is strengthened as a result.
This value is indispensable for us! We don't have a weighbridge and we use this value to define our quality. The ATRO bin is ideal for comparing and calculating.
